Former CRDS Dean, current Morehouse president Robert Franklin to preach on Day 1
Morehouse president Robert Franklin to preach on ‘Day 1’
The Rev. Dr. Robert M. Franklin, the president of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga., will preach July 5 on “Day 1,” a nationally broadcast radio program also accessible online at Day1.org. The program features a sermon for Independence Day weekend preached by Franklin along with interviews conducted by the program’s host and executive producer, Peter Wallace.
Franklin became the 10th president of Morehouse in 2007. Before that he was the Presidential Distinguished Professor of Social Ethics at Emory University, where he was also a senior fellow at the Center for the Study of Law and Religion. Earlier, he served as president of the Interdenominational Theological Center, the graduate seminary of the Atlanta University Center consortium.
Franklin earned a degree in political science and religion from Morehouse, and continued his education at Harvard Divinity School and the University of Chicago, where he earned his doctorate in ethics and society, and religion and social sciences.
In his sermon based on 2 Corinthians 12:7-10, entitled “Strong in the Broken Places,” Franklin explores the paradox of the strength that comes from great sacrifice, tragedy, and pain. “Like our predecessors, Americans today understand disappointment and terror,” Franklin says. “And despite—or perhaps because of—our difficult lessons and hard-earned wisdom, we have been made strong in the broken places.”
Extended video and audio interviews with Franklin will also be made available on the program’s Web site at http://day1.org
Distributed to 200 radio stations across America and overseas, “Day 1” has been broadcast every week for 64 years, winning numerous awards in the process, including the George Foster Peabody Award and the Communicators’ Award for Excellence in inspirational radio. Formerly known as “The Protestant Hour,” the program is produced by the Alliance for Christian Media in association with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the United Church of Christ and the United Methodist Church.
