J. C. Wynn passed away on March 31, 2009
J. C. Wynn
CRCDS announces with a heavy heart that J.C. Wynn died on March 31, 2009 at 88 years of age in Catonsville, Maryland where he lived with his wife Rachel at the Charlestown Retirement Community. He grew up in Johnstown, PA, where he graduated from high school. After completing his major in philosophy at The College of Wooster and graduate work at Yale Divinity School, Rev. Wynn was ordained in 1944 and served as associate pastor at the First Presbyterian Church in Evanston, Illinois, and subsequently as pastor of the Presbyterian Church of El Dorado, Kansas. He developed a specialty in the field of marriage, family and sexuality, and was appointed in 1950 as Director of Family Education for the Presbyterian Board of Christian Education in Philadelphia. This led to Wynn's pioneering work in the field for the denomination through numerous articles, books, lecturing, and conferences. He became the chairman on the Commission on Sexuality in the Human Community, served on the Committee on the Family for the National Council of Churches and the Family Council at the World Council of Churches, and helped to write the Vatican-Protestant report on inter-faith marriage. Dr. Wynn was a fellow of the American Association of Marriage and Family Counseling, and a member of the national clergy committee for Planned Parenthood, among others. He wrote or edited nine books on marriage therapy and family issues.
Dr. Wynn received his MA and Doctor of Education degrees from Columbia University, as well as a Doctor of Divinity degree from Davis and Elkins College. He joined the inter-denominational faculty of Colgate Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, New York in the academic year 1959-60, where he developed and administered an innovative doctoral (Doctor of Ministry) program in family therapy that graduated many ministers, priests, rabbis, and nuns until his retirement in 1985. He was Professor of Pastoral Theology and Director of the Graduate Study Program in Family Ministries. During those years, he was a frequent guest lecturer at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, Union Theological Seminary, San Francisco Theological Seminary and at colleges throughout the US, Canada, South Africa, Lesotho, and Korea. In retirement, Dr. Wynn lectured and served on various committees as a member of the Presbytery of Baltimore, Maryland, ministered locally to residents of Charlestown, and taught seminars there on philosophy, especially on Plato.
Upon his retirement the John Charles and Rachel Wynn Family Ministries Fund was named and support given by friends and family to honor J.C., recognizing the need for ongoing workshops and lectures, scholarships, and an endowed professorship - in affirmation of Dr. Wynn's concept of the family as a legitimate "mission field" for the church. In 1990 an annual lectureship was established with interest proceeds from this fund.
Memorial gifts may be sent to The Wynn Fund for Family Ministries, Colgate Rochester Divinity School, 1100 S. Goodman St., Rochester, NY 14620.
A memorial service will be held on April 13 at 11:00 am in Our Lady of Angels Chapel at Charlestown Retirement Community, Catonsville, MD. J.C. Wynn leaves behind his beloved wife Rachel, whom he married 65 years ago in 1943; their three married children, Mark Wynn of Arnold, MD, Martha Borland of West Sunbury, PA, and Maryan Ainsworth of Old Greenwich, CT; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
